Graduating from college is easy when compared to the effort of getting hired after graduation. Once hired, maintaining your professionalism and managing your finances can be challenging. Journey after School seeks to provide guidance for new graduates. Like the syllabus provided by a professor at the beginning of a semester, Journey after School is a brief, easy read.

Excerpt 1-

You’ve proven you have the skills, experience, and personality to join the company. From the first day on the job, you have to perform and do it professionally. For young professionals, a challenge will be proving that you are capable of performing the job. You are no longer in college and should not give your colleagues the impression that you are a student.

Appearances are important, and just like at your interview, you should wear appropriate attire to work. The business attire you wore to the interview may not be required for your office; therefore, it is important to ask your recruiter or hiring manager about the dress code. As you begin working, you can observe your colleagues and determine how formal or casual they dress.

In school, classes had a defined schedule, but in your career, you may not have a specific schedule. Many employers expect that you will be at work at a reasonable time and do all of your hours for the day. If you have the luxury of choosing your own schedule, be mindful of your company’s core business hours. Typically, the core hours
are defined between a start and finish time like 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If your schedule is predefined, be sure you are punctual. You are not expected to work non-stop when you arrive at work, but you should minimize your downtime. When you are away from your workstation for an extended period of time, you should inform someone that you will be away. Your colleagues should not have to search for you and should never question whether you have actually worked all of your scheduled hours.

From David LeRoy
The Full Monty Author

You may recall that recently Sue Grafton got into a huge kettle of hot water when she had some less than flattering things to say about Self-Published authors in an interview for a blog in Kentucky. http://louisvilleky.com/2012/08/louisville-author-spotlight-welcomes-sue-grafton/

It spread like fire through the tight community of Indie authors once it was picked up and reposted on The Passive Voice blog.  Soon she was redacting and explaining herself like crazy.  Within the interview, she also stated that people who write in coffee shops are exhibitionists, but I never got an apology.   :)

She is right, because I write in coffee shops and that is exactly what I am doing.  I am seeing others, and being seen by them on a consistent basis.  I am in full view -- not really full Monty, but you get the idea.

Back in early August, I sold a copy of my book to one of my coffee shop friends.  Unknownst to me, her husband is the host of an all male book club.  A week later, she bought six copies of my book from the trunk of my car outside Starbucks.  But then, there was a problem.  The all male book club only wanted to read non-fiction, and my book is historical fiction.  No problem as I explained to her that the vast majority of the book is historically accurate and follows history closely.  All of this conversation, of course, took place in line at Starbucks in front of other customers who were probably listening.  She put her foot down and insisted they read the book. They did, and they enjoyed it.

On October 11th, I am sitting down to dinner with this club to discuss The Siren of Paris. They have even offered to buy me dinner, and I intend to bring out some of the original documents I used to create the story when I was in the research phase.

Now, had I not been at Starbucks, and not had the time to talk with this person, whom, this entire opportunity would not have materialized.  A blog tour organizer is well worth the investment;  however, there is no way I could say to them, “get me a gig at this book club.” This is not something I can buy, but only be invited to, if chosen.
Word of mouth marketing is the golden goose dream of every author; however, manifesting this sort of phenomena takes a concerted effort and requires lots of on the ground, direct public interaction. It is also nearly impossible to control; therefore, you must always be prepared.
“Oh, you wrote a book, what is it about?” somebody asks.

Develop a quick elevator pitch for your book.  Be ready to tell a summary right off the bat without missing a beat between the pitch and your food order.  Here is my pitch.

“It is about a young man who returns to Paris before the war and falls in love with the wrong kind of woman, because she becomes a collaborator, and he is too blind to see it….Tall, No whip Mocha please, and I will take the cheese Danish … and so you see, he gets a hard lesson in both life and love.”

Of course Sue is sitting on my right shoulder calling me an immodest exhibitionist.  Seth Godin is on the left shoulder jumping up and down for joy.

Now, so far I have sold two full boxes of my book out of the trunk of my car.  Some I sell, and others I have had to mail off for reviews.  However, this is 60 physical books, usually signed and dedicated, going out to people who have requested them.  I was referred to a group that does public readings, and I was the featured reader for 45 minutes.  I sold four copies, and one resulted in a positive review.  I sold a few books, while on a camping trip, to people with whom I was chatting.  One of the people was very familiar with some of the historical details of the book.

This “immodest behavior” adds up with time and will not result in an arrest.  Last night my chiropractor asked me if I had done much recently, in town, with the book, and I thought for a second and said, “Not really.”  But in reality, that is not true.  I have been doing a lot to be seen, as an author, yet I just have not given it much thought because I am not speaking to a crowd at the local book store, and I am not on T.V.  The reason he asked is because someone recognized me in his office and connected me to the book.

This is not a sure fire bet to sell thousands upon thousands of books.  I have no idea how you will climb your way to the top of the Amazon ranking for your selected category.  It certainly is not an overnight solution from which you can see results next weekend.  But, it is the one of the most powerful marketing tools I know.  Word of mouth takes its time, but once it takes off, it is impossible to stop.

Don’t believe me? So, how did all those cat videos go viral on YouTube?

Timeout! To Retreat Review & Renew A practical 3-Step Strategy To Advance Your Life, Relationships & Businesses "THE playbook for happily-ever-after!" Timeout! To Retreat, Review & Renew was created, in part, at the request of family, friends, and colleagues who have observed and been curious about our personal annual timeout as a couple: the time we set aside each year from our daily routine to focus on our personal and professional relationships-with each other, and the world to which we are both individually connected. Our annual timeout has provided the "breather" for us to re-couple and move forward with a renewed sense of purpose, respect and joy-together. TIMEOUT! To Retreat, Review & Renew is about the insights and practices we've gained and developed along the way. It's also about defying the odds when it comes to melding families, businesses and strong-willed personalities...like us, and maybe, like you! These techniques have assisted us in creating a richer, happier, and more playful life together and we hope they'll add richness to your life too. TIMEOUT! A 3-Step Success Strategy Retreat... Everyone has relationships. We deal with them every single day of our lives. Whether it's with our husbands, wives, children, or business associates, we deal with some sort of relationship with another human being. Timeout! To Retreat, Review, & Renew is a blueprint for success no matter the type of relationship you face.

How on earth will they ever make it as a couple? How many times have you thought that very question when looking at friends that have new relationships? Two people from completely different backgrounds, little in common. Phyllis and Jerry had this asked about them, and they even thought it about themselves at one point. BUT...they knew there was something they loved about each other, that each had something to compliment one another. How did they make it all these years and still stay together?

A Timeout!

Within these pages you will find advice on the best ways to communicate in all of your relationships. From reading the first sentence, I started implementing their steps. My husband and I have taken their advice and finding it works great! I love the ideas they gave, not only for us as a couple, but as parents and business owners as well. The book comes complete with tools and links for amazing resources that if you follow and really take heed, you may just find that a Timeout! is exactly what you need to analyze and communicate with other people.

They by no means tell you how to live your life, but instead offer ways to make it all it can be. The Campagna's have written an easy to follow plan that you just won't be able to say no to. I highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to learn how to live life with less stress, and that wants to communicate effectively with others.

Virtual Book Tour Pit Stop with Kim Upstone

Today my guest is Kim Upstone,  author of All I Want is Everything.  Welcome Kim and thank you so much for stopping in.

What inspired you to pen your first title?

My very first book was actually a result from all the questions I received from clients and realtors.  One area of interest for me has been the effects of our environment upon our well being. For believers it is called Feng Shui and for non believers it is called Neuro-architecture. From my background in design and as an accredited stager I wrote the book so others would know how to use all those principals combined to prepare your home correctly to sell. Appealing to a buyer aesthetically as well as emotionally, creating a wonderful feeling to the home, as well as a beautiful home for people to buy.

My latest book began as a letter to my children. Many years ago, when they were very young, I had embarked on a spiritual journey to find “my everything” . When they both began asking questions about why we are different in our thinking and attitude than others I realized that they had lived almost their entire life in the brightness of the light from what I learned. They were raised differently and my relationship with my husband is different than most, in addition to the fact that we understand our place in the world and the way we live has served us all very well through pain and loss and even success. We know who we are and who we strive to be, we have a map to keep us on course and understand our great value to ourselves and the world, but do not compare ourselves to others, so our ego is not involved.
I was told by an angel while on my journey that I needed to go where there was no trail and leave a path. Until I wrote the letter to my children it did not dawn on me that the trail was my original journey and the path would be writing the books for others to share, a trail to happiness for those who choose to venture.

How long have you been writing?

I wrote poetry endlessly when I was younger and then stopped for a number of years, except for journaling. I took it up writing seriously again three years ago when I wrote my first book.

What was the hardest part about writing this particular novel book ?

This was a very personal experience for me. It was painful to pour over all my old journals from when I took my original journey, but it was an important part of being able to create that path for others. To go back and see how the darkness of unhappiness and negativity encompassed my world was sobering. What if I had not asked for guidance or missed the message the angel delivered to me, I understood quickly that my life would have been very different than the life I have lived.

Have any dreams been realized as a result of your writing?

My dreams were realized the moment a woman said to me after reading my book that her life had gone from ordinary to extraordinary and nothing had changed in her life but her thinking. If she is the only person I helped it would have been well worth it.

Is there a message in your novel book you want readers to grasp?

I hope they grasp much from the book, but I realize that each will take from it what they are ready for.If there was one thing I would hope that they understand that nothing of value comes free. It all takes work. Happiness, a peaceful heart, love, great relationships, raising children that are wonderful citizens of the world, these are all things that take hard work. In addition, I want them to understand that anything that you work hard for and value you are not so quick to give up on; children, relationships and happiness.

Where do you hope to take your writing in the future?

My most recent book is the first of a series of four books. I knew from the beginning there would be four books. The first book is all about us, who we want to be, defining what “our everything” is and creating a map to guide us through life.
The second will be about relationships. The third is about raising children and the fourth is about being successful and balancing remaining bright in your spirit while having abundance present.

What advice do you have for writer's just starting out?

Write because you love write. If you love it the rest will fall into place.

Anything else you would like to share with us today?......

I would love people to understand their importance in the world. Each of us was put here for a reason and we each need to seek out for ourselves, in whatever way works best for us, that purpose and passion that lies within us.
