A Wild Ride! Virtual Book Tour & #Giveaway with p.m. terrell - Secrets of a Dangerous Woman

Fasten your seat belts because you're in for another wild ride with p.m. terrell's, Secrets of a Dangerous Woman, on tour now at the Virtual Book Tour Cafe'. I'm chatting with p.m. today about her book and she's offering you a chance to win her Black Swamp Mysteries Prize Pack, which includes some goodies from the town of Lumberton where the Black Swamp Mysteries is based. Enter using the Rafflecopter below, and enjoy!

Welcome p.m.! So glad you could join us today.

MM: Many authors relate their characters to people they know. Is this the case with your characters and do you see yourself in any of them?

Each of my characters is unique, just as people are in real life. So I take bits and pieces of personalities and physical characteristics from people I know but when combined with other personality quirks and traits, they end up not resembling any specific person. I also try hard to keep each character within each book very different from the others they interact with; I enjoy pitting opposites together, for example. My characters tend to be much larger than life than I am, which is a good thing!

MM: Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

Dylan Maguire, hands down. Dylan is an Irishman who comes to America in Vicki’s Key, the second book in the series. In Secrets of a Dangerous Woman, he is on his first CIA assignment. On one hand, he is definitely the kind of man you’d want protecting you; he is resourceful, opportunistic and capable of killing. Yet there is another side to him that can be very gentle and very attentive. When I created his character, it was important for another character, Vicki Boyd, to fall for him hard and fast. So I did quite a bit of research into what women like. I learned they were most turned on by Scottish accents, followed by Irish accents and then Australian. I decided to make him Irish because their language is more melodious and softer than the Scots. He has a five o’clock shadow, which many independent surveys showed really appealed to most women, thick hair (for running fingers through) and of course, he is muscular and fit.

MM: Who is your most favorite character from any book of all time?

That is a really tough question. It would have to be Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind. He is actually very much like Dylan Maguire; the biggest difference is Rhett Butler was American, through and through!

MM: If you could dive into the pages of any book, which book would it be and what character would you be?

That is another toughy because I would want the romance without the drama and suspense! My friends and family all know that I like no drama in my life—only in the pages of my books. So, having said that, I love the romance between Ramses the Great and Julie Stratford in Anne Rice’s The Mummy. I would be Julie Stratford and Ramses would look like Russell Crowe in Master and Commander. Yes, I would fall in love with a mummy. But it’s Ramses the Great and he’s worth it!

MM: If your book was to become a movie, which actors/actresses do you see playing the parts of your characters?

Alan Duggan and Antonio Cupo both have the appearance of Dylan Maguire. Could either of them handle an Irish accent? I’d love to find out!

I can definitely see Amy Adams playing psychic spy Vicki Boyd.

And Lindsay Lohan would be awesome as bad girl computer hacker Brenda Carnegie.

Robert DeNiro is who I patterned Sam, their CIA boss, after, so of course no one else could play the role!

MM: What can we expect from p.m.terrell in the future? Any new projects?

Secrets of a Dangerous Woman is my 14th release. The 15th, Dylan’s Song, is scheduled for release in the spring of 2013. I am currently working on the final edits for that book and have started the next in the Black Swamp Mysteries series for release in 2014.

In Dylan’s Song, Dylan Maguire and Vicki Boyd travel to Ireland on a CIA mission: to locate and rescue a missing CIA operative using Vicki’s psychic spy abilities and Dylan as leader of the ground operation. While there, Vicki learns why he left his native Ireland—while harboring a secret of her own.

I have also started a new Ryan O’Clery series, which follows a homicide detective with a touch of the paranormal and romance; I think of it as Robert B. Parker meets Nicholas Sparks. I do not yet have the publication date for the first in that series but I am currently writing the sequel.

Irishman Dylan Maguire is back in Secrets of a Dangerous Woman, reuniting with psychic spy Vicki Boyd. In his first mission with the CIA, he must interrogate recently captured Brenda Carnegie. But when she escapes again, it's obvious she's had help from within the CIA's own ranks. With Vicki Boyd's psychic assistance, Brenda is back in his custody again. And now he must find out why some in the highest branches of government want her dead - and others will risk everything to help her. And when he discovers her true identity, his mission has just become very personal.

Excerpt:

Something grasped Dylan’s ankle and he recoiled as he stared downward. Sam had rolled toward him, grabbing his ankle with desperate strength. His bloodshot eyes were open, revealing his misery.
We’re gettin’ you out o’ here,” Dylan said.
Chris raced through the doorway to peer over the banister at the floor below.
No,” Sam croaked. His voice was dry and his fingers tightened around Dylan’s ankle, tugging him into coming closer.
Dylan knelt.
I’m not going to make it,” Sam said laboriously.
You won’t be the judge o’ that.”
Leave me here.”
I’ll not be leavin’ you.”
Sam’s fingers tightened around his pants leg. “Go to Vicki. Save her, Dylan.”
Dylan stared into Sam’s eyes at the mention of her.
She needs you,” Sam said, his fingers loosening as if the mere effort of holding on was too difficult. “Tell her—tell her I love her. I always have.”
Dylan’s jaw dropped. “I refuse to tell ‘er,” he heard himself saying. “You’ll be tellin’ her y’self.”
I’m a dead man,” Sam said, his hand dropping back to the floor. “Leave me. Save yourself. And save Vicki.”
They’re coming in,” Chris said in a stage whisper.
Dylan rose, glancing at Sam as his eyes closed once more before rushing into the open hallway. “Which door?”
Chris pointed.
Then take these stairs. We’ll go out the side door. We’ve got to get to the girls.”
Chris glimpsed into Sam’s office, where his body lay still, before giving Dylan a fleeting look. Nodding, he rushed to the top of the stairs, Dylan on his heels.
Dylan had taken one step downward before he froze. In a fraction of a second, he hurled around and dashed back to Sam’s office. Sliding one arm under his knees and the other under his torso, he lifted the man in his arms and carried him to the stairs. Glancing down as he descended, he was met with Sam’s open eyes, questioning and baffled. “I’ll not be leavin’ you,” Dylan said simply.

Virtual Book Tour Cafe' Interview with Michael Meyer - Covert Dreams

Allow me to introduce you to author, Michael Meyer. Michael is currently on tour with his novel, Covert Dreams at the Virtual Book Tour Cafe'. I've had the pleasure of chatting with Mr. Meyer and I hope you enjoy the interview.

Welcome Michael.

MM:  Many authors relate their characters to people they know.  Is this the case with your characters and do you see yourself in any of them?
Yes, I know that bits and pieces of myself have found a home in my characters. My sisters tell me that they can see me at times as they read my work. For instance, the caring that B.J. demonstrates to his distraught wife, who is afraid of losing her husband, reminds me of me. Stan’s tenacity at not giving up in his search for his missing wife, no matter how difficult the circumstance, reminds me of me.

MM:  Who is your favorite character in your book and why?
Stan Halsey, newly arrived in Saudi Arabia, is on a life or death mission. His wife has disappeared. She is out there somewhere in the burning sands of Arabia, frightened to death, in a new country for the first time, and in a country where she knows that a segment of the population targets Americans, infidels one and all.  And she’s been out there for over twenty-four hours now, missing under mysterious conditions, but nobody believes him. In fact, nobody, not the American authorities nor the Saudi government officials think that she is real. There is simply no evidence of her very existence anywhere. But Stan Halsey is a determined man, a guy who simply cannot be derailed from his valiant efforts to locate his wife, to discover what is going on. He is tenacious, like a pit bull, allowing no one and no thing to get in his way. He simply is a man who will not be stopped until he locates his wife. No obstacle is too much for him to overcome. He will do whatever it takes to find her and to solve the mystery of why her very existence is being questioned by everyone around him.

MM:  Who is your most favorite character from any book of all time?
I have been such an avid reader my entire life, and I have such eclectic tastes in reading, that this is an extremely difficult question for me to answer. If pinned down, though, I would say that Rosie, one of the main characters in my Caribbean murder mystery, DEADLY EYES, would surely be there right at the top of my list. Why? Because I simply fell in love with her. She is feisty, sexy, quick-witted, and very independent.

MM:  If you could dive into the pages of any book, which book would it be and what character would you be?
I would love to be Doc in John Steinbeck’s CANNERY ROW. He was such an interesting character, genial, caring, and always curious about the world around him.

MM:  If your book was to become a movie, which actors/actresses do you see playing the parts of your characters?
I feel that Kevin Costner would make a great B.J., Harrison Ford would be fantastic as Stan Halsey, and Julia Roberts would be the perfect Dabbie Hodson. I only wish I had the power to make all of this come true.

MM:  What can we expect from Michael Meyer in the future? Any new projects?
I hope to write until I die. I love to create plots and characters. I love language, stringing words together to create different moods. I am currently working on something quite different from anything that I have ever written before. It is a memoir of my journey from grieving widower to the once-again happily married man I am today. It is entitled THE THREE KITTIES THAT SAVED MY LIFE, dedicated to my rescued stay cat, my inspirational three-legged cat, and my wonderful new wife, Kitty.

Author bio:

I have resided in and have visited many places in the world, all of which have contributed in some way to my own published writing. I have literally traveled throughout the world, on numerous occasions. I have lived in Finland, Germany, Thailand, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Saudi Arabia, where COVERT DREAMS is set. I gained the wanderlust to see the world, to experience other cultures, at an early age, and this desire has never left me. If anything, it has only gained in intensity as I have aged. I try to travel internationally at least once a year. In the interim, I spend lots of time traveling around both my home state of California and other nearby states.
I spent my early years in the small town of Lone Pine, California, the home of almost every western movie, in addition to a wide variety of other genres, made in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. In fact, Hollywood still films parts of big-time movies there today. My dad, the town’s lifeguard at the time, personally knew John Wayne, Lloyd Bridges, and Lee Marvin, all of whom came to the town’s pool, the Memorial Plunge, at times to cool off after a hectic day of working in the sun. I was even an extra in a movie filmed there in 1957, MONOLITH MONSTERS, a B-cult favorite even today. I was ten years old at the time. Even though I resided in a small town hours from the big city, I was exposed to the excitement of action and heroes at a formative age, and, thus, my interest in writing novels of suspense such as COVERT DREAMS was born.
As a recent retiree from a forty-year career as a professor of writing, I now live in Southern California wine country with my wife, Kitty, and our two other cats.

Genre: Suspense/thriller/mystery

Imagine waking up remembering intimate details about a country in which you have never traveled and fluently speaking a language that you have never spoken. B.J. is living the ideal life. He has a great wife, a wonderful job. And yet he is experiencing life-like vivid dreams of Munich, a city he has never visited.

Stan Halsey is a professor in Saudi Arabia, who sends for his wife to join him. She arrives, and, in the blink of an eye, she vanishes, leaving no trace of ever being alive in either the United States or in Saudi Arabia.

COVERT DREAMS is a fast-paced international suspense thriller that moves from Munich to the burning sands of Saudi Arabia. What is real, and who is responsible for the terrifying nightmare?

Excerpt:

The Munich all around her was bustling with activity. She could hear it from all directions. Munich was a wonderful city, a fun-loving place, the live and let live ebullience of the city emanating from its every nook and cranny. She had had a lovely stay here. All of it had been so adventurous, so new, so unlike life back home in Arizona. She could vividly recall the first time she had ventured into a Munich beer garden, where the liter mugs had been so huge that she had had to lift hers with both hands, and the giggles, from him, until he too had had to use both hands.

The fumbling noises he had been making came to an abrupt halt. He began stroking her cheek again. Gus looked so happy, so young, so full of life. It was so hard to imagine that he could be so heavily involved in all this horror.

Gus smiled at her once more. His eyes were soft, so gentle, so caring, so loving.

Maybe this was some kind of huge mistake. Maybe he wasn't going to kill her after all. Maybe everything would turn out happily ever after. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.

But then suddenly she saw it clearly. It was no fairy tale. There would be no maybe. This was real, as real as the mixture of sadness and fear that now flooded her brain.

And then she died, with her eyes wide open, challenging, piercing his to the end.

Chatting with Paranormal Mystery Writer: Rocky Leonard - Secondhand Sight Giveaway

Welcome to Mass Musings Rocky! Rocky Leonard is currently on tour with the Virtual Book Tour Cafe' with his paranormal suspense, Secondhand Sight! I think you will love this book, and you can win an e-copy by leaving a comment. Don't forget to include your email address so we have a way to contact you should you win.

We're chatting with Rocky today...Enjoy :)

MM:  Many authors relate their characters to people they know.  Is this the case with your characters and do you see yourself in any of them?

Sort of like Alfred Hitchcock making a cameo appearance in each of his movies, at least a part of my personality is in my novels, in at least one character. Dan Harper, the protagonist of Secondhand Sight, is a lefthander, a tennis player, computer programmer (former in my case) and father (future in his case) and a wife who spent part of a difficult pregnancy in the hospital--but other than that, we have nothing in common.

In my first novel, Coastal Empire, sidekick Nick Mason shared many attributes in common with me, except for his brief adventure as a big-time drug smuggler.

MM:  Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

Besides my hero Dan Harper, I really like Detective Bill Wassner. He’s a bit sarcastic, like I can be. Wassner is driven and tenacious—he really hates the evil that men do. Wassner is the type of guy you’d want at your side when you’re riding into battle.

MM:  Who is your most favorite character from any book of all time?

Joe Trona, the protagonist in Silent Joe by T. Jefferson Parker, who described the character so well that I could see him. Joe is self-conscious about his looks due to a childhood tragedy, a gentleman without equal, and a warrior—he’s the guy you’d want on your left, if Wassner is your right-hand man.

MM:  If you could dive into the pages of any book, which book would it be and what character would you be?

Good question. The first title that came to mind was Diamonds are Forever, because I’d like to be very close to a fortune in jewels, and who wouldn’t want to be James Bond? Except I’m not British, so that doesn’t work. Okay, I’d like to be John Corey in Plum Island by Nelson DeMille. Corey is a great detective who displays a brilliant sense of humor while working on a very difficult case—a real smart aleck, but also a tough guy.

MM:  If your book was to become a movie, which actors/actresses do you see playing the parts of your characters?

Honestly, I haven’t seen a movie in several years—I’m a little out of touch when it comes to Hollywood. I can name actors that I like, but the problem is that I can’t see them as the characters in my novel. Someone like Morgan Freeman or James Earl Jones might make a good Peter Driscoll.  When I think of Wassner, Brian Dennehy comes to mind, but he might be too old for the character. Charlize Theron could play Beth. It doesn’t matter 0whether or not she actually looks like the character I envisioned when I wrote the part--I’d just like to see her starring in a movie in which I had some involvement.  We need a young leading actor for Dan Harper…maybe Chris Pine, the new Captain Kirk in Star Trek? Or James Franco, who seems to be in just about every new movie? Matthew McConaughey? Obviously, I would not make the best casting director.

MM:  What can we expect from Rocky Leonard in the future? Any new projects?

Yes, my next novel will be a sequel to Coastal Empire in the Robert Mercer series, coming back by popular demand for those characters. I’m calling it Purgatory.

Dan Harper is just an ordinary guy, having an ordinary day…until he ruins his tie during lunch. When he visits a thrift store near his office for an inexpensive replacement, merely touching a secondhand tie triggers a flood of gruesome images only he can see. Are they hallucinations, or suppressed memories?
Dan desperately wants these visions to be nothing more than a product of his imagination, but soon enough, he discovers real crime scenes and murder victims. Dan can no longer ignore the unseen powers forcing him to confront the demons of his past. Dark forces prod him to seek the identity of the faceless murderer haunting his dreams.
Dan’s worst fear is the suspicion he’ll eventually confront the face of this brutal killer in last place he wants to look – the mirror.

I steadied myself in front of a small mirror on the wall near the tie rack. My trembling hands went through the practiced motions of tying the tie, the same moves I had made first thing in the morning, four days a week.
I looked into the mirror and gasped. Blood splatters covered the glass, obscuring my reflection in the mirror. My hands felt warm and sticky. Reluctantly, I looked down and saw to my horror that they were covered in wet blood. It was all over me. My mind reeled. Bile rose in my throat. I looked around frantically for the source of the spreading crimson stains. Did I cut myself? I felt no pain. What in the hell happened? How? Did the workers break the glass after all? Yet when I glanced in its direction, the glass display case remained intact.
For several seconds, my mind babbled a brook of questions for which no answers came. My knees felt weak, on the verge of collapse. Time crept by. I marked its passage with my breathing, the only way I could tell time hadn’t stopped completely. I looked around for someone in the store to come help me. Words came to mind to cry for help, but they refused to pass my lips.
A couple of muted sounds that might pass for the bleating of a sheep rose in my throat, barely audible. No one in the store noticed me foundering in distress. I looked around helplessly, desperate to avoid looking into the mirror again. But I had to know. I forced my eyes to gaze at my own reflection once more.
To my surprise, my completely normal reflection looked back at me. There was no trace of blood anywhere. As quickly as it came, the sensation of tacky blood sticking to my hands
faded to nothing. My hands once again felt clean and dry. I steeled my courage and looked down to confirm they were free of blood. I looked back up at the mirror, incredulous. It was as if nothing had happened. The blood splattered all over the glass and my clothes had disappeared as inexplicably as it had materialized.
Was that a hallucination? What the hell just happened to me?
Chuck reappeared, carrying a large cardboard box stuffed with household knick-knacks he began arranging on a table. He looked over and noticed that I now wore a different tie. “Found something you like?”
I did my best to smile naturally, still speechless after the inexplicable experience. It was a relief to have Chuck close by, in case the gory visions returned. Maybe he could help me understand what had happened, if it happened again. I cleared my throat, nodded and grunted, finding it impossible to tell him about the episode.
Just act normal. Don’t let him see you sweat.
“Is something the matter? Are you okay?” Chuck asked. “You look a little pale.”
I made a more serious effort to clear my throat before I dared speak again. I decided against mentioning the strange vision. I didn’t want someone I just met to think I was a complete nut. I desperately wanted to get out of the musty old building, thinking it possible the fresh paint had stirred up toxic airborne bacteria. It might be eating my brain at that very moment.
I finally found my voice. “Yeah, I’ll be okay. I just feel a little funny—an upset stomach from lunch, I think. I need some fresh air, that’s all. This tie will do, for work at least. I’d better go.”
Chuck smiled and said, “We appreciate your business. You’ll always have the honor of being our first customer. I hope you feel better. Thanks, and come back soon. Remember, we plan to be open next week.”
I waved, not trusting myself to speak.
Back in the steel sanctuary of my car, I collected myself enough to suppress the images that had flashed before my eyes moments earlier. At first, I tried to deny the experience, hoping to banish the images from my mind for good.
For the first time in my life, I seriously wondered if this was what it felt like to lose my own mind.
