I'm a chick who writes stuff that makes you laugh. My blog has been nominated for funniest blog this year. I've been told I write in the style of that Dickens guy. Kidding.

I'm a mom, a wife, and a recovering pharmaceuticals rep. It's been a long process but I'm doing okay, thanks.

I usually write about men (The Mancode), marriage, kids, being a mom, living in the OC (ya know--being a pale redhead living in a sea of blondes) and vodka. Not necessarily in that order depending on the day.

I also write occasionally about serious stuff, like the death of someone I once loved or lost love--so don't be shocked if you come visit and don't see the funny.

Don't come here looking to find advice about how to be sweet or nice. I'm pretty much allergic to both of those words.

If you want to learn how to find humor in everyday life, well, I'm really not your girl either. Mostly I just laugh at stuff and make up words (See "Refrigeratoritis and Manesia.")Yet somehow it all seems to work.

And don't call me cute. (Hint: babies and puppies are cute. Grown women are not.)

You Can Write that Memoir!

For some reason, all my life, people have asked me how they should go about writing a memoir. Some felt they’d led an interesting life. Others wanted to capture family memories. Still others wanted to leave a gift to their children and grandchildren. Sometimes it was as simple as a collection of stories; other times, it included recipes or mementos. Many wanted to take a traditional chronologic approach. No matter, it was all important to them.

Now, I’ve only just recently written my first memoir, so why I received so many inquiries through the years, I have no idea. However, I think I’ve learned a few things that might just help you accomplish your dream of writing your memoir.

Gather the stories. Make a list of events and happenings you absolutely want to include in the book. Then, capture whatever memories you have and jot them down.
Don’t think you won’t remember. As you begin to write, you’d be amazed at how much comes flowing back.
Try the tape recorder method. Or, in today’s technology age, the digital mp3 method. Always keep something with you so you can record ideas as they pop up. Many cell phones have a memo feature. Use it.
Tell the stories. Some people are just better at talking than writing. So, tell the stories to someone but record it as you’re doing so. Then, play it back and transcribe it from there.
Everything doesn’t need to be included. Just like cleaning your closet, keep what’s important and toss the rest.
Get different perspectives. This can be fun if you have a large family, because everyone will remember an event differently.
Look through photos to spur your thoughts. At the same time, you can select which ones you want to include in the memoir.
During the editing stage as others are reading it for comments, they’re sure to come up with missing details or stories you may have forgotten. Take the information then determine if you want to add it in.
Write from the heart. This is more than just a collection of facts. Your very DNA is in the book. Say it with love.
Publish it! Whether you want to keep it private among your family, or put it out into the world, your memoir will delight for years to come.

I think I heard somewhere that life is pain. I beg to differ. Life is the ability to survive the pain.
When I began my journey into creating my novel Light Under the House, I only had a germ of a plot and not much else. I was a college drop out at the time and didn't have much going for me. I had also sown a lot of seeds into endeavors that turned out to be useless. I had a mountain of wasted opportunity and regrets piled up. I wasn't a trained expert in any field. What did I know? Then again, I did know a few things I knew about rejection. I knew about the loss of friendship. I knew about living with frustration, anger, and fear. I knew those things. I knew I had a story to tell.

So I asked myself, what does it look like to overcome the wounds I've been dealt? What does it look likeil and come back again? What does faith in action look like? As I started to ask myself these questions, the novel grew and so did I. In the process I learned some key things:

If you want to challenge the reader, you have to challenge yourself. Light Under the House is a novel about character. I knew I wanted to be better. A better brother, son, friend, a better man. If I didn't find it challenging, I was certain no one else would.
Don't be afraid to be open and generous. I've learned not be afraid to talk about issues through my story and its characters that are personal me and my struggles. Our scars are just proof that we're still alive; we can show them.
Everyone has a strength; let yours shine. Don't get me wrong; it's not all pain. I've lived a very blessed life. While it was true that I didn't have any technical expertise, I did have life experience. By the time fifteen I had lived in numerous places in the U.S. and abroad. I had been around the world. I had diverse experiences to draw upon in dealing with people and life. It also helped to hone a unique perspective. What are your strengths?
So can the worst of times make for the best of lines? I think it can. If not, I'm sure I'll survive it.

1. What do you love most about blogging?

I love getting to work with so many different authors, publishers and various representatives as well as getting to know so many of those that come by to read my blog.

2. Do you have a most memorable post?

I'd have to say my posts about ADHD and ADHD/ODD. There are so many assumptions about those disorders and as a mom with 2 ADHD and 1 ADHD/ODD, I've been on all the sides of the fence as to if those even exist.

3. What is the funniest thing you have ever blogged about?

I'd say it's my day to day ramblings that pop up here and there about my kids, pets and friends.

4. What do you hope your readers will take away from your blog?

I hope they find somethng they decide they want to read, or something they can laugh about because it's not just happening to them in their lives.

5. Where do you hope to take your blog in the future?

I'd love to have more of a set schedule with more regular readers and authors. I'm working on setting up 24 hours of giveaways for January 1st with an author interview each day for January and guest post each day for February. A Twitter party is in the works as well. Anything and everything to make my blog better for my readers and the authors that contribute to it.

Yes, currently I have 10 going.

7. In your opinion, how would readers, old and new, benefit from your blog?

I think of they're old readers, they'll find books and authors they've never heard of and find a good book that they may have passed up due to a not so great cover. New readers will be able to spend hours and hours there reading interviews and guest posts from authors and so many reviews.

He has taught and lectured in the United States and internationally in the areas of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Mood disorders, and chronic suicidal ideation. He completed medical school at Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and Residency Training at the University of Rochester. Dr. Sivak has served on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Alzheimer's Association and the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross and hosted a weekly mental health Radio Program for eight years on KUWS- Wisconsin Public Radio. Currently Dr. Sivak serves on the legislative committee of the Minnesota Medical Association, is a assistant professor at the University of Minnesota-Duluth College of Pharmacy and is in full time private psychiatric in Duluth.

BK: Welcome Joe. Thank you so much for chatting with me today. What inspired you to pen your first title?

JS: It was a story that was within my psyche and my soul that was just dying to burst out onto paper. We all have a story inside of us. In the end we all have our own personal hell, our own struggles, that are no more or less exceptional than anybody else's. But I wanted my future generations to understand where they came from. Most off all, Alzheimer's disease is such a lousy process, it affects 5 million, and one of the worst parts about it, is the isolation is causes in families. I thought the book might actually help somebody and cut down on that isolation. It's hard for me to really imagine any huge endeavor without maybe benefiting someone, and that pushed me to finally get it done.

BK: How long have you been writing?

JS: I started the book back in 1989 so on and off for 20 years.

BK: What was the hardest part about writing this particular book?

JS: Finding the ending. Alzheimer's disease is so life changing for the victim and the family, long after the physical death the strange poignancy of the pain does not end.

BK: Have any dreams been realized as a result of your writing?

JS: Yes, I got a book out with a real ISBN. I guess that was a dream.

BK: Is there a message in your novel you want readers to grasp?

JS: Yes start treating the elderly with honor and respect they deserve. Start talking about Alzheimer's for real even if it does not affect your family, you can't catch it by understanding it, and for those affected you are not alone.

BK: Where do you hope to take your writing in the future?

JS: A work of fiction about psychiatric residency.

BK: What advice do you have for writer's just starting out?

JS: Write because you love to write, because you need to write. Your writing be it fiction or memoir or whatever is a deeply personal and intimate look into your heart and psyche. Don't expect anybody else to see it that way. Selling books and giving a part of yourself and your toil and effort and creativity etc are two disconnected things. Don't give up if you truly need to have a published work, there are many ways to do that now more than ever. Most importantly, keep perfecting your craft of writing.

My first. I really enjoyed hosting my friend, Linda Robertson, author of the Persephone Alcemedi series. We talked about her second novel Hallowed Circle. She’s a great gal and lots of fun.

3. What is the funniest thing you have ever blogged about?

A new writer in my critique group read a passage from my third novel in which the POV character is a male vampire courtesan. Without meeting me, he thought that a gay man wrote the chapter. I had to laugh that since I’m a heterosexual woman. Actually, I took the comment as high praise. When I told the anecdote to a good friend of mine he said, “Well, almost.” I just had to share all of that.

4. What do you hope your readers will take away from your blog?

The blog is evolving. I recently took some time off to get ready to launch my second book, but will be back in full swing come January. My mission is to help other authors to promote their books and share information with fans and aspiring authors.

5.Where do you hope to take your blog in the future?

I plan to start posting more about the craft of writing, more humorous stuff and offer links to helpful sites.

6. Do you ever have contests and/or giveaways on your blog?

Yes, when authors do interviews on my site, I offer them the opportunity to sponsor a giveaway. From September 28th through November 2nd, I’m holding a giveaway contest to celebrate the launch of my novel. Twilight of the Gods, Book Two of the Immortyl Revolution. I’ll be giving away copies of both of the novels in the series and other merchandise.

7. In your opinion, how would readers, old and new, benefit from your blog?

They will have a chance to hear about new authors and books.

Author Betty Collier Stops In - Book Review & Giveaway

Today I chat with author Betty Collier. Betty wrote Living Inside the Testimony, a testimony of her journey through life so far. I had the pleasure of interviewing Betty, plus I reviewed her book. My review will be after the interview, and you get a chance to win yourself a copy of this wonderful book. Actually, Betty is offering 2 copies of her book and I am offering a copy of her book. BK: Thank you so much for being with us today Betty. I am so happy you took time to stop in and chat with us today. Please tell us a little about yourself......

BC: On the back of the book, I wrote that I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, nurse, author, and child of the King. That summarizes my life and everything else that I am involved in. My number one priority is to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And as the bible instructs us, everything else comes after that. Of course my family is my number one priority on this earth. I have been married to the absolute love of my life for 24 years, and we have 2 boys, ages 16 and 11. That in itself is a full-time job, just keeping up with the 3 of them. I am also a full-time RN; I work as a nurse case manager during the day, and share the journey inside my testimony as an author whenever I can - morning, noon, and night.

BK: What inspired you to pen your first title?

BC: I wrote the book after being divinely inspired by the Lord to share my testimony with others. The book is obviously based on my faith, and I wrote it well aware that not everyone would share my faith, but I am sharing my faith with anyone who chooses to believe. I never wanted to be an author, and if you had asked me prior to January 2009 if I would ever write a book, my answer would have immediately been "absolutely not." I never had a desire to write a book, so you're likely wondering why I wrote it and why I am trying to share it with others now. Perhaps my honesty will make you wonder if the book is even worth purchasing. However, this one thing I do know...I am an author. I became one overnight, and in fact, I know the exact night it happened. It was after midnight when January 9, 2009 turned into January 10th, the night I dreamed about this book. I am confident that if you allow me to share my journey with you, you will understand perfectly, but only if you have the faith to believe.

BK: How long have you been writing?

BC: I think I was an undercover author for many years prior to realizing my gift as an author. I have always been a writer, but never formally confessed it until this book which I wrote in 2009.

BK: What was the hardest part about writing this particular novel?

BC: The hardest part was actually finding the time to write. Writing was easy and came very naturally. The ideas and thoughts flooded my mind, and I had to find time to keep up with what I was thinking and get everything down on paper.

BK: Have any dreams been realized as a result of your writing?

BC: Absolutely. As I share my journey, I get feedback from readers that they too have been living inside testimonies, and they are encouraged and inspired after realizing their journeys have been prepared uniquely for them by the ultimate MASTER PLANNER. Believers as well as non-believers enjoy the book because it offers hope in the future, and forces you to take a look at your past and realize that it really wasn’t you that was in control of it anyway. It is a dream come true for readers to not only enjoy the book, but to really understand my message.

BK: Is there a message in your novel you want readers to grasp?

BC: My purpose in writing was to simply encourage and inspire readers to discover that we all live inside testimonies meant to be shared with others, but I have been just as encouraged and inspired by readers comments. It confirms my original belief that the Lord wanted me to share my journey of faith. I hope to help readers discover the inspiration that lies within each of us because we can all help inspire and encourage others.

BK: Where do you hope to take your writing in the future?

BC: My plans are simply to share my journey with others, and I will go wherever this book takes me in order to do that. This is only the beginning. Although I had no prior plans to write a book, after literally becoming an author overnight, I know that this is something that I will never give up now. I am passionate about my story, and it’s my desire to reach as many people as I can to inspire and encourage them. There is more to come, but I will have to wait on divine inspiration to figure out what that is.

BK: What advice do you have for writer's just starting out?

BC: All of us have something to share with others, and if we would simply take the time to begin the writing process and stay committed to it, we could all write something to share. Don’t give up on your ideas and your dreams. Just keep writing.

BK: Anything else you would like to share with us today?

BC: As a result of writing this book and sharing my journey with others, I have been given a fabulous opportunity to host an internet radio talk show based on the message in my book. My Thoughts:

First of all I just love this cover. It's a beautiful portrayal of what is between the pages. The book itself, I loved too. Betty wrote as if she was actually sitting at a kitchen table chatting over coffee, telling you the story of her life, and all the blessings that come with it. From finding her true love in high school, the ups and downs that were presented to marrying him when they both thought they would never be together again, to the birth of her children, getting her dream home, and ending with the question, "What Must I Do To Be Saved?"

There was humor where at times I found myself laughing with Betty and times that she truly moved me and I found myself feeling so proud of her. This wasn't a book of preaching the gospel, but of pure inspiration. Betty has made herself available at the end of her book should anyone have any questions, or feel led to accept Jesus into their lives. I love how Living Inside The Testimony was written and I think Betty has accomplished what she has set out to do....simply to share and inspire. Well done Betty!

1. What do you love most about blogging?

The interactivity. Connecting with readers and other authors has proven a great learning experience as well as a wonderful way to virtually meet others. My blog’s very active, usually with a new post every day.

2. Do you have a most memorable post?

Not the post itself, but a comment made me do a happy dance. I’d posted video clips of writing tips from my literary hero, TC Boyle. One of his assistants commented, thanking me. Of course, I responded I’d be thrilled to have him as a guest. :) No one responded to that, unfortunately. But it shows that some big names are Googling themselves, and might someday find your blog – another reason to keep it professional.

3. What is the funniest thing you have ever blogged about?

Hm, I can’t recall anything humorous, though there’ve been many fun posts. I celebrate each blog birthday (my blog was 2 in June), and include interesting and entertaining news about the industry and other authors. For instance, I recently posted several book trailers by Meg Cabot that made me, and hopefully readers, laugh.

4. What do you hope your readers will take away from your blog?

Mostly I hope it entertains readers, though I aim to make it informative as well as interesting. My posts range from news about my own books, to featuring a wide range of authors, to writing tips, to videos of my favorite musicians. There’s something for everyone!

5. Where do you hope to take your blog in the future?

Bigger and better’s always my motto, in every aspect of writing. As new features become available, I’ll include them if they’re a good fit. For instance, the “Search” box has been a handy tool. I’ve also started two new series called Story Elements and Casting Call, in which I provide background information on my stories. I always love learning about other authors’ or artists’ creative processes, so hopefully readers will find it interesting too.

6. Do you ever have contests and/or giveaways on your blog?

Yes, many times, and if not on my own blog, then I’ll post a link to whatever blog is hosting me with a giveaway.

7. In your opinion, how would readers, old and new, benefit from your blog?

Readers will hopefully take away a sense of my serious commitment and approach to writing, and can keep up to date with the latest news, or learn about the works of other authors. And to have fun. When there are lots of comments, it’s like a virtual party.

8. Anything you would like to share, thoughts, events, etc?

I’m participating in Ramsey’s Reviews Halloween Bash on Sept. 28-30, and in three giveaways sponsored by Night Owl Reviews for Halloween, Autumn and Winter, and my books and I will be at a local event called Celebrate the Book in Carlisle, Pa., on Oct. 23 Being part of the Virtual Book Tour has been a great experience.    My favorite post on my blog has to be the interview with Nathan, my main character from NO TURNING BACK. Depending on a reader’s take on heroes, in my humble opinion, he is gorgeous! Mmmm mmm mmm!

   Nothing comes to mind at the moment. Perhaps I need to make some of my posts a bit lighter for my readers. I’ll definitely take that into consideration. I don’t write comedy so it doesn’t come easy to me.

   My blog is heading in the direction I want right now. I opened it up to author interviews back in July so that I could help other authors who, in turn, end up helping each other get noticed by the public as most of us are not known to the public just by seeing our name out there. Being a part of Virtual Book Tours helps me introduce even more new authors!

   My contests are run off my main website (www.deannajewel.com) and I pull a winner each month. I also have a link to my main site. One large internet event is Blogmania and I was a part of that.

   Readers will find new authors on my site that they can add to their TBR lists. So far, the readers, as well as the authors, have enjoyed the interviews posted and I archive them so they can be seen by all visitors.

   I hope more readers will discover me as they visit my blog to read the interviews of the guest authors. I have links to my other sites, my newsletters (which are also archived), a blog hop that readers can click on and visit participating blogs, a link to BookBuzzr so two chapters of each of my books can be read for a taste of my writing which I hope entices them to want their own copy of my novels.

Meet Lillian Brummet on Our Host Appreciation Features

Lillian has been with me from the beginning. We first met when I started my site for BK Walker Books. I started out just doing book features and she submitted her books to me for a feature. She is a wonderful person and another that loves to pay it forward. Please give her a warm welcome as we get to know her better.

1. What do you love most about blogging?

There are several things that blogging offers me... Originally I started blogging after we spent some time building name recognition in the initial stages of our writing career. What I mean by this is we didn't start blogging right away as a means to promote our writing career. Instead we developed name recognition prior to starting a blog or a newsletter. Blogs and newsletters require a lot of time to manage, building a list of readers and so on, and this means that a writer has to balance these things as part of their time management.

The first blog I had was over at MySpace.com, which I still maintain (http://blog.myspace.com/canadianauthor) - this blog, Canadian Authors, is now used to list media appearances and radio or blog guests for the week... so it is kind of like a week-at-a-glance into the events happening in our lives.

I started using Blogger.com back in Oct 2008 due to the ease of setting it up and the excellent upgrades the owners continue to have done. This is known as the Brummet's Conscious Blog (http://consciusdiscussions.blogspot.com) and is where I have the opportunity to reach a blog-friendly audience, one that my radio show or newsletter or website might not otherwise reach. This audience receives blog posts every single day - offering positive, motivational information, inspiring news clips, thought-provoking interviews and quotes and more. This also offers me a chance to share my own media appearances, public events, and so on.

However what I "love most about blogging" is that I can share things that really mean a lot to me, personally. I personally find it exciting, thrilling even, when I learn about someone who's found a fantastic new use for used tires, or has learned a new technology that turns plastic diapers into reusable pallets - or a young teenager who's changed their community for the better. I love celebrating these kinds of things on the blog.

2. Do you have a most memorable post?

The most memorable posts I've done involve an event I participated in back in July - for Buy a Poetry Book for Someone Special month. ...I think that is what it was called... Anyway, the whole month long we had poets come in to share their work and that was a real special time for me. I love poetry and the comments we had from readers was really nice too - the readers are articulate, thoughtful and often offer resources or tips. Sometimes readers will make their comments public, while other times they will respond privately to topics I've addressed in a blog post.

3. What do you hope your readers will take away from your blog?

It is my hope that readers will be inspired to make a small change in their life that results in a more conscious, sustainable community. Each small action, from picking up a bottle in the alley and putting it in our recycling bin to donating used items, can make a huge impact on the world as a whole. The ripple affect from each of these small contributions will accelerate this global movement towards sustainable and conscious living. People often discount their own small contributions and feel they are not making a difference. Dave and I hope to change their mindset to a more positive, proactive one by offering the information, quotes, interviews and resources that we do through the various mediums in which we work (music, teaching, writing, radio interviews, blogs, etc). In exchange we hope that readers support us, and our fundraising efforts, by purchasing a copy of one of our products.

4. Where do you hope to take your blog in the future?

Right now I am reaching slightly over 2000 unique hits per month - I'd like to see this doubled by the end of the year. Consistent posting, writing in a friendly style, and promoting - promoting - promoting will make this happen. This is often the balancing act of the blog-manager... One must promote the blog and keep posts happening, along with interesting links in the sidebars on a regular basis.

But how does one do this when they have a life, and a business to run? It isn't easy to find the time to run a blog sometimes... Have you noticed that a lot of new blogs phase out quickly? This is because time management and finding substantial content can be a challenge. So what I like to do is to post early every morning and get the promotions for the blog done as early as possible. Being one of the first chores in my office every day, the blogging becomes routine and I actually miss it when I take days off from the office.

That is another thing new blog owners will notice - after taking a few days off from the office the reader numbers can sometimes trickle down to a small number - which can be hurtful. But it might be encouraging to know that if the blog manager is consistent and persistent, they will develop a large enough audience to carry them through these slow times. Not all readers will visit every day, some will visit once a month, or only once, or twice a week... etc. So getting lots of readers is the key to having consistent numbers as far as unique hits go. Don't be afraid to say you are taking a weekend away from the office - let your readers know and then encourage them to scroll through the archived posts and your links, etc. People respond positively to this. If you don't let them know you won't be posting for a few days, and they come to check out the blog... they'll be confused and possibly think that the blog is no longer active.

5. Do you ever have contests and/or giveaways on your blog?

Oh, sure - we've given away lots of things on the Brummet's Conscious Blog - from environmentally conscious products to books and services, such as coaching. We don't usually do these types of giveaways though, since it is not the focus of the blog. However occasionally someone will ask us if we'd consider giving away this or that, and we do consider each request.

6. In your opinion, how would readers, old and new, benefit from your blog?

I think that readers who are about to make a change in their life - be it gardening or composting, recycling or reusing, donating or volunteering, writing, or greening their business or their home... - they will find resources, tips, advice, and interviews with experts who can help them in their journey. Having people share what they have done, what worked for them and what didn't work for them can really save people a lot of time, hassle, disappointments and money. So that is why I am so big on networking and hearing from my readers. I love to share their thoughts, comments or questions by working them into an upcoming blog post, and offering the resources they send me on the blog as well.

7. Anything you would like to share, thoughts, events, etc?

Yes! I'd love to have your readers drop by my site: www.brummet.ca - where they can find information about everything that we do, including our blogs, radio show, newsletter, books and products, and our fundraising efforts too.

Interview with David Fingerman and Review of Silent Kill - Virtual Book Tour

Today I am doing an interview with author David Fingerman, plus giving a review of Silent Kill, a much anticipated post. Sorry it's late David, we lost our kitten and our pit and youngest son are so upset. I had to make a flyer and put it around town lol.

BK: Please tell us a little about yourself.

DF: I've lived in Minnesota my entire life. I love this time of year and am not a fan of summer. Me and heat don't get along. I got severely sunburned years ago when I went to Miami during spring break. My ideal weather is cloudy, 60 degrees, and a good wind. My ideal day is writing in a dimly lit room while listening to my old LPs (vinyl is the way to go, man). Despite rumors to the contrary, I'm really quite sane (clinically speaking).

BK: What inspired you to pen your first title?

DF: Inspiration for my first published short story, "Autumnal Equinox" came from a Loreena McKennett song, All Souls Night. Inspiration for "Silent Kill" came from so many years of sitting in the courtroom. One gets to see the best and worst of human behavior and emotion. It's something I strive to capture in my writing.

BK: How long have you been writing?

DF: Pretty much since I learned how. But serious writing, since the early 90s, at least that's when I sent out my first short story in hopes of getting it published. (On a side note ~ it never happened. It's now collecting dust in my file drawer. I think there's a moral in there somewhere about perseverance.)

BK: What was the hardest part about writing this particular novel?

DF: I had written a lot of short stories and had the mindset that a novel is just a really long short story. It's a totally different thought process. Honestly, I didn't know what I was doing at the beginning (some would say that I still don't). Then there's the research. I'm somewhat lazy when it comes to research, but the deeper I got into the "Silent Kill" the more research I had to do.

BK: Have any dreams been realized as a result of your writing?

DF: Just having a book published is a thrill. I certainly don't mean this as a slap to self publishing ~ there are so many advantages to going that route, and I have the utmost respect for authors that do (I've gone that route too), but for me there was a certain validation that someone in the publishing business thought my work was good enough to put into print.

BK: Is there a message in your novel you want readers to grasp?

DF: Stay in school and don't take drugs. KIDDING! Messages? Absolutely not! I just want to tell an entertaining story that will stay with the reader long after they put the book down. But seriously ~ stay in school and don't take drugs.

BK: Where do you hope to take your writing in the future?

DF: The New York Times bestseller list and movie rights would be just ducky.

What advice do you have for writer's just starting out?

Write every day and write because it's a passion. Join a writers' group. Develop a thick skin. If you can't take criticism (and unfortunately, not all of it will be constructive) you're probably in the wrong line of work.

BK: Anything else you would like to share with us today?

DF: Follow my virtual book tour and leave comments. At the end of the tour I'll be drawing a name and sending the winner an autographed copy of "Silent Kill."

Silent Kill by David Fingerman was an excellent mix of mystery and suspense. From the first page Fingerman holds nothing back.

Louise Miller is a female cop that gets a lot of hassle from her fellow officers. Her brother Andrew is a new cop in a different precinct.

When Mark Lone Bear, her friend and fellow officer turns up missing, Louise puts in all effort to find out what happened to him.

Throughout the investigation, her brother who is getting broken in as a rookie, stumbles upon a development in Louise's case, Mark Lone Bear and his car.

When two more people end up missing, Andrew and Louise work to find answers to Mark Lone Bear's murder and the kidnappings. The closer they get to finding the murderer, the more danger that befalls upon those they love and care for.

Was Mark Lone Bear mixed up in something he shouldn't have been that led to his death? When one more kidnapping hits Louise a little too close to home, will she save all three before they end up dead too? Find out in Silent Kill.

Fingerman did an excellent job in his first full length murder/mystery. Full of suspense and with an imagination that will leave you wanting more, this is one title you will want to get your hands on.

1.   What do you love most about blogging?

I love to chat. I’m the person who will walk into a room of strangers and come out knowing them all lol Blogging is the same thing. I like meeting people from all walks of life. I have met some really lovely people, some I have stayed friends with for years, yet never met. Blogging is like second nature for me. A lovely way to meet new people from all over the world without leaving my office.

2.   Do you have a most memorable post?

God yes. A long time ago, when I was a novice blogger I had a guest on my blog and she wanted to write something herself for a post. My site is PG rated and I never gave it a second thought. The next day I got a ton of emails saying do you know what’s on your blog. I hadn’t checked the post fully. I just dutifully loaded it on. It was the most explicit sex scene I have ever read. Actions that would make a brothel madam blush.....I still feel faint thinking about it now!!!

3.   What is the funniest thing you have ever blogged about?

Tampax string lol No seriously. The perils of tampax string. How many ladies have had their’s break off in their hands? That was an hilarious blog which had me spluttering into my cup of tea.

4.   What do you hope your readers will take away from your blog?

Hopefully my friendship, help. Information. I’m told I am a mind of useless information lol

5.   Where do you hope to take your blog in the future?

Everywhere I hope. I never really think about it.

6.   Do you ever have contests and/or giveaways on your blog?

I always have them on my blog. I just did a fabulous one. I always give something to a random guest.

7.   In your opinion, how would readers, old and new, benefit from your blog?

Readers can get to know the author as a person not just a writer. I like my blogs to be quirky. For the authors personality to shine through. Authors get to know new authors with whom they can swap idea’s with, information anything really. From this year alone, just from blogging, I have received a publishing deal, Article writer job for a magazine and two radio show offers. Can’t be bad!

8.   Anything you would like to share, thoughts, events, etc?

I’m a host for Blogfess so I hope to meet a lot more people on the way this year. I’ll be giving away a ton of things as well as unique gifts too as a thank you to a random commenter.

I blogged about an Italian chef and her newest book. Through the process, I learned some great recipes. I asked her about the message she wanted to convey, and she said:

"First of all, that you can make any meal into a special occasion with a special meal and don't have to wait for a Holiday to cook these recipes/menus. *Holidays should not be about the material gifts we receive but about the other gifts that we take for granted- having food on the table and friends and family and others to share the food with. These are the real gifts to be thankful for!"

3. What is the funniest thing you have ever blogged about?

I had written an artilce for ClassesUSA.com about "The Power of the Pen"- not only did the Miami Herald pick it up becasue it included an interview with Stefan Pinto, a Playgirl centerfold and budding actor from Miami, but I blogged about the exposure. I had no idea my source was a Playgirl centerfold!

4. What do you hope your readers will take away from your blog?

I'd like my readers to stay up to date on new books and updates.

5. Where do you hope to take your blog in the future?

I'd like my blog to be a home for authors on virtual blog tours, more and more in the future.

First on our Host Recognition Feature, and I'm sure she will amuse you as much as she does me, I would like to welcome Ginger Simpson! Ginger has been hosting book tours with us for a few months now and she is a wonderful woman and host. She is the owner of the "Dishing It Out" blog.

I had the opportunity to ask Ginger a few questions. So let's get started and learn more about Dishing It Out with Ginger Simpson!

1. What do you love most about blogging?
Blogging allows me to interact with people almost immediately after they comment. It also gives me a place to rant, rave, and celebrate milestones in my life and career. For several years I did a monthly newsletter, but when blogging became the rage, I switched over and I love it.

2. Do you have a most memorable post?
I have more memorable posts than you have room for. I always wanted to be a stand-up comic, so I use humor to entertain my readers…that’s when I’m not hosting a slew of other authors to help promote their work. I believe in paying it forward.

3. What is the funniest thing you have ever blogged about?
Oh, my gosh. I’m sixty-four-years-old and I can’t recall where I was three minutes ago. I guess people will just have to go to my blog and find what amuses them most. Trust me, I’ve blogged about a lot of things…actually, I just recalled one post called “A Little Saturday Toilet Humor.” Here’s the link: http://mizging.blogspot.com/2009/02/little-saturday-toilet-humor.html If you’re easily offended, then don’t go, but I laughed for hours when I read it.

4. What do you hope your readers will take away from your blog?
I hope people will see that I’m a real person with a life, family and problems just like everyone else. Since my life is an open book on my blog, I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t see the obvious flaws.

5. Where do you hope to take your blog in the future?
I love that my “followers” are growing in numbers, and I’m jazzed when I see new names added to my email subscriptions. I would love to one day be recognized as one of the most entertaining and informative blogs on the web.

6. Do you ever have contests and/or giveaways on your blog?
I host fellow authors frequently, and many times, prizes are awarded to a name picked from someone who commented on the post. I’ve held contests myself, given away copies of books, promo items, and even promised to dedicate a WIP to only lucky person. People like getting things for free, even if it’s not something costly.

7. In your opinion, how would readers, old and new, benefit from your blog?
I believe that the vast genres and topics displayed at Dishin’ It Out can be a form of entertainment for all ages. I always ask my visiting blogger to post a disclaimer prior to presenting anything that has sexual content or may be offensive to some folks. I expect to see much more for the younger crowd since my first YA offering, Shortcomings, will soon make a debut.

8. Anything you would like to share, thoughts, events, etc?
I have eight new releases coming in 2011. I would love to have people stop by my blog, http://mizging.blogspot.com, and my website, http://www.gingersimpson.com and check out the coming attractions. There is something for every age group. I love to hear from fans and peers alike, so comments are always welcome. Thank you so much for letting me share a little about myself and my blog.

This is a genre of fiction known variously as "street lit," "ghetto lit," "urban lit" or "hip-hop lit" has begun registering impressive sales, catching the attention of the publishing industry. Previously sold as typewritten photocopies on street corners, these pulp-fiction books now appear in slick paperbacks available in bookstores and online, for instance on

Urban Fiction was (and largely still is) a genre written by and for African American's. Although my book Drama has universal appeal.. In his famous essay “The Souls of Black Folk,” W. E. B. Du Bois discussed how a veil separated the African American community from the outside world.[1] By extension, fiction written by people outside the African American culture could not (at least with any degree of verisimilitude) depict the people, settings, and events experienced by people in that culture. Try as some might, those who grew up outside the veil (i.e., outside the urban culture) simply could not write fiction truly grounded in inner-city and African American life.
In 1965, The Autobiography of Malcom X was published. Because this non-fictional read captured the realistic nature of African American urban life for coming-of-age young men, the book has consistently served as a standard for reading among African American teenaged boys.

In the 1970s, during the culmination of the Black Power movement, a jailed Black man named Robert Beck took the pen name Iceberg Slim and wrote Pimp, a dark, gritty tale of life in the inner-city underworld. While the book contained elements of the Black Power agenda, it was most notable for its unsparing depiction of street life. Iceberg Slim wrote many other novels and attained an international following. Some of the terminology he used in his books crossed over into the lexicon of Black English.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, urban fiction in print experienced a decline. However, one could make a cogent argument that urban tales simply moved from print to music,[3] as hip hop music exploded in popularity, with harsh, gritty stories such as "The Message" and "Dopeman," set to a driving, strident drum rhythm. Of course, for every emcee who signed a recording contract and made the airwaves, ten more amateurs plied the streets and local clubs, much like urban troubadours telling urban fiction in an informal, oral manner rather than in a neat, written form. Hip Hop lit in print form, though, is thriving.[
Toward the end of the 1990s, urban fiction experienced a revival, as demand for novels authentically conveying the urban experience increased, and new business models enabled fledgling writers to more easily bring a manuscript to market. With this new wave of renaissance street lit comes a whole new ballgame when it comes to promotion and exposure. Aside from hand-to-hand sales, which seems to work best in a genre where word-of-mouth has proven to be worth more than any large ad campaign, the Internet has increased the authors and publishers the ability to reach out to the genre's readers. With Internet savvy, many self-published authors who once had no shot of recognition are now household names.

What inspired you to pen your first title?

My very first book was actually a result from all the questions I received from clients and realtors. One area of interest for me has been the effects of our environment upon our well being. For believers it is called Feng Shui and for non believers it is called Neuro-architecture. From my background in design and as an accredited stager I wrote the book so others would know how to use all those principals combined to prepare your home correctly to sell. Appealing to a buyer aesthetically as well as emotionally, creating a wonderful feeling to the home, as well as a beautiful home for people to buy.

My latest book began as a letter to my children. Many years ago, when they were very young, I had embarked on a spiritual journey to find “my everything” . When they both began asking questions about why we are different in our thinking and attitude than others I realized that they had lived almost their entire life in the brightness of the light from what I learned. They were raised differently and my relationship with my husband is different than most, in addition to the fact that we understand our place in the world and the way we live has served us all very well through pain and loss and even success. We know who we are and who we strive to be, we have a map to keep us on course and understand our great value to ourselves and the world, but do not compare ourselves to others, so our ego is not involved.
I was told by an angel while on my journey that I needed to go where there was no trail and leave a path. Until I wrote the letter to my children it did not dawn on me that the trail was my original journey and the path would be writing the books for others to share, a trail to happiness for those who choose to venture.

How long have you been writing?

I wrote poetry endlessly when I was younger and then stopped for a number of years, except for journaling. I took it up writing seriously again three years ago when I wrote my first book.

What was the hardest part about writing this particular novel book ?

This was a very personal experience for me. It was painful to pour over all my old journals from when I took my original journey, but it was an important part of being able to create that path for others. To go back and see how the darkness of unhappiness and negativity encompassed my world was sobering. What if I had not asked for guidance or missed the message the angel delivered to me, I understood quickly that my life would have been very different than the life I have lived.

Have any dreams been realized as a result of your writing?

My dreams were realized the moment a woman said to me after reading my book that her life had gone from ordinary to extraordinary and nothing had changed in her life but her thinking. If she is the only person I helped it would have been well worth it.

Is there a message in your novel book you want readers to grasp?

I hope they grasp much from the book, but I realize that each will take from it what they are ready for.If there was one thing I would hope that they understand that nothing of value comes free. It all takes work. Happiness, a peaceful heart, love, great relationships, raising children that are wonderful citizens of the world, these are all things that take hard work. In addition, I want them to understand that anything that you work hard for and value you are not so quick to give up on; children, relationships and happiness.

Where do you hope to take your writing in the future?

My most recent book is the first of a series of four books. I knew from the beginning there would be four books. The first book is all about us, who we want to be, defining what “our everything” is and creating a map to guide us through life.
The second will be about relationships. The third is about raising children and the fourth is about being successful and balancing remaining bright in your spirit while having abundance present.

What advice do you have for writer's just starting out?

Write because you love write. If you love it the rest will fall into place.

Anything else you would like to share with us today?......

I would love people to understand their importance in the world. Each of us was put here for a reason and we each need to seek out for ourselves, in whatever way works best for us, that purpose and passion that lies within us.

I have 2 children Melissa who lives in Hawaii and Brent who is married and lives in Tempe, AZ and his wife and they are expecting their first child Grace in August. Guilty As Charged

When I was younger, I had a relationship that broke my heart. Adverbs, adjectives and accolades did not do him justice. He was the perfect man. No matter how many times he showed his true colors, I was steadfast in my belief that he was perfect. I languished in my illusion (actually delusion) of his perfection. I was in love.

I didn’t know what to do. There was no expert who could guide me. No published Q & A pertinent for my situation. I searched for a plan, a guidebook, and a path to success: how I can get the storybook ending with Mr. Perfect.

Every “what not to do while dating” offense a girl can make, I embarrassingly did. I was available to him. I telephoned him. I was the one who initiated contact, demonstrating my interest as if he had doubts. Running to see him when he beckoned, accepting his last minute dates and last minute cancellations. Worse, I accepted his lies, I had no self respect. I threw myself at him. I was insane! Where were my friends when I obviously needed them? An intervention was needed but no one restrained me.

Unwilling to consider the possibility of his rejection, I changed myself to meet his requirements.
Yes, Mr. Perfect had criteria. His personal preference was models, blonde skinny models. His office walls were covered with photographs of Mr. Perfect with his choice of arm candy. It was a shrine to his ability to attract these trophy girlfriends. A medium height, curvy size eight brunette (me) didn’t seem to be a worthy enough prize for a man of with his considerable talents.

I tried my best to meet his standards. I dieted, exercised, groomed, and ingratiated myself into his social universe. I attempted to succeed with this game plan. But I committed the biggest sin a girl can. A don’t so whopping that I am banned from giving advice forever. A mistake so huge, there is no known recovery. This dating felony pains me even now, years later. I told him, I was in love with him.

What was wrong with me? The girl police should have come and thrown me directly into jail or a padded cell on the spot. No trial or psych evaluation was necessary.

Crimes Charged: Extreme Stupidity and whatever else is beyond.

Verdict: Guilty.

Sentence: Rejection by Mr. Perfect.
My idiocy haunted me for years. If only I had a second chance. What could (coulda, woulda, shoulda) I have done differently while staying true to myself. In my fantasies, I would still be me, but smarter. What was I thinking during this dark period of being in love? How did I permit myself to act like a fool?

One day, I looked back at my past actions, those silly schemes, attempts at change, and idealistic belief that if I loved him with a pure heart, he would love me back. I started to laugh. It was funny, very funny. Telling this story would be my second chance and shot at redemption

Reality hit me as I lay pen to paper, Mr. Perfection was my upstairs neighbor, he was The Man Upstairs. That was the original title for my book, ‘The Man Upstairs,’ but people thought it was a book about religion.

To this day, I am uncertain what was going through my pathetic naive head during that time. Maybe I wasn’t thinking properly? There are theories that posulate love affects (and obviously impairs) your cognitive thought processes. Next title was ‘What Was I Thinking?’ but people thought that was a self-help book.

My healthy curvy body, thin not emaciated, did not fit into his model sized world. I wasn’t who he wanted, whatever my size. Paroled from my romantic stupidity I realized that the intellectual/emotional connection didn’t exist between us. It is what is on your insides that counts. It’s a cliché but true. The older I get, it’s my sense of humor that gets me through the days and the nights. I love when someone makes me laugh, even if it’s me! I am a Size Eight in a Size Zero World.

The book A Pecunious Life written by Author Mike Dolan has great advice for improving ones life, not only does the author write details of how to become more wealthy, but he incorporates his own experiences which are woven into lessons of life quality. Learning from the past, learning from mistakes, learning from beliefs or mis-beliefs, life-altering events, and exercises where the author asks you to sit in a quiet place and reflect on the lessons given.

Today's economy is one of the most difficult times in recent history to find work, and many people are not even making use of their college degrees as related to employment! Please tell us a little about yourself....
I’m a 27 year old author of speculative fiction with 4 published novels, 6 due out over the next year, 2 ready to submit to publishers, and 1 in the works. I live and work in Maryland with my absolutely amazing husband Dave and a meatball of a cat named Tyler.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
I never had an epiphany or anything. I just started writing out of boredom one day at work and I never stopped. I was instantly addicted to the freedom of writing and the ability to transport myself to different, more exciting worlds.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Anywhere and everywhere.

Where do you get your ideas from?
I ask myself “what if” questions and see if the answers intrigue me. If they do, I write a story! I’ve also written several stories that were based on dreams.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Having to stop. I wish I could write all day every day, and at this point in my life, I can’t. It’s very frustrating sometimes because writing is such a huge part of who I am and I hate having to stop or focus on my full-time job instead. I do love my job, but I’d much rather be writing.

Do you have a favorite of your books?
I love the premise of “Song of Eidolons” so much, but I think my favorite book is one that hasn’t been published yet. It’s called “Rabbits in the Garden” and it’s set in the 50s-60s on Martha’s Vineyard and in Taunton State Lunatic Asylum. It was an absolutely pleasure to write because there were so many characters that were unlike ones I’d written before. Plus, it was fun to write the quirks of Taunton’s juvenile patients…not that it took too much to be committed in those days. Research was also really cool because my mom’s family grew up on Martha’s Vineyard, so I got to hear a lot of interesting stories about being an Island kid in the 50s-60s.

If you could invite one of your characters to dinner, which one would it be?
Captain Jack Racine from “The Sky: The World”, no doubt about it. He’s the kind of guy you want to slap and kiss in the same night, the kind of guy that girls think they can reform.

Do you relate to any of your characters?
Kat Barlough from “The Sky: The World” reminds me a lot of me in my teens and early 20s, especially in the line, “She was a cute girl who could never ascend to the ranks of sexy”. I used to feel that way a lot, particularly when compared to a lot of my gorgeous friends. Honestly though, I think there are pieces of every character I’ve written that I can relate to, even the super evil ones. I’m not evil at all, but I definitely understand what its like to feel jealous or afraid or anything else that drove those particular characters to doing evil.

Who's your favorite author?
Roald Dahl. From his children’s books to his macabre short stories to his autobiographies, I love it all. I also love Stephen King and Bret Easton Ellis.

Do you have a favorite novel?
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Juster. I can’t even begin to guess how many dozens of times I’ve read it, but it still entertains me to no end. It’s cute and clever, but it has a lot of great life lessons too.

What would you do if you couldn't be a writer?
Probably go crazy. I’d definitely have to find some other creative outlet because I have too many wacky thoughts bouncing around in my brain to ignore.

If one of your novels were to be made into a movie, who do you see as casting actors?
If “Song of Eidolons” was a movie, I could see Scarlett Johannson or Keira Knightley as Delaney, Liam Neeson as Dags, and Jude Law as Robeson.

Is there an underlying message in your books, if so, what is it?
Definitely, but they’re up for interpretation by the reader. I don’t necessarily need the reader to get the same thing out of the story that I did. I like to nudge people toward certain conclusions, but I love it when someone interprets something completely different than what I intended.

What is the one thing you hope your readers take away from your books?
Hopefully, entertainment and a story they’ll want to read over and over.

What dreams have been realized as a result of writing your novels?
Being published was such a huge dream that I never thought would come true, so I’m still reeling from that one! The other huge dream I still have is to be able to write full time, and I’m working really hard to try to make that one come true. Please O Please O Please…..

What advice can you give to new and aspiring authors?
If you love to write, write. Don’t let anybody tell you you’re wasting your time; if it makes you happy, it could never be a waste. Also, write as much as humanly possible. It’s the only way you’ll get better.

Are you currently working on any projects?
The novel I’m currently working on is a pretty big departure from my other books. I call it a glitter and gore extravaganza and it’s set in a strip club/bowling alley called PINS…which is also the title of the novel. I’m only into the 3rd chapter, but I’m having a blast writing it.

Any upcoming events you'd like to share?
For anybody in the Maryland area, I will be exhibiting my inky wares at the Baltimore Book Festival on September 25th. I’m going to have books for sale, lots of free merch to take home, as well as bookmarks featuring a few of my novels.

Tackling the Roadblock

A frequently asked question that most authors get is:

What do you do when you have writer’s block?

Well, there is never a correct answer for this question because it all depends on the person. There are some authors who may try to write through the block while others may take a break.

Personally, I choose not to write. I feel as if I come up with the worst material only because I feel obligated to put something on paper. It is then that I realize that just because I am an author, it doesn’t mean that I have to write daily. My personal advice to all published and aspiring authors is this: Write only when you feel inspired.

It is never good to force yourself to do something that you don’t want to do. Just think; the break might be good for you. You might come up with new ideas for the plot or even a new character.

A lot of times we view writer’s block as something that is negative, but maybe it isn’t. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. Here’s an exercise that I recommend for all writers. Even if you only do it once, the next time you experience writer’s block, simply stop writing. Wait a few days or even a few hours and revisit the story. See if you come up with something more exciting and intense then what you wrote last! Feel free to share the results!

When Princess Tamea has reoccurring dreams of a young man fighting in a futuristic war far ahead of her time, she worries about her sanity. But when she also has a vision of this man some years older, where he dies in her arms in another time and place, she knows something in her life is about to change.

Then she meets King Parker and his brothers from the neighboring country of Altare. This King looks just like the man from her vision. Once Tamea touches him, her mind is swept back into his past, and to those dreams that have haunted her for months. As she searches for answers, she finds even more questions about this King's mysterious past and how his country had quickly gained their land from their neighboring countries of Nepal and Bengal.

When King Parker meets the youngest Colonel in Laie's history, he's definitely not comfortable with this young woman being assigned to personally guard his safety while their two countries forge a new alliance. To finalize the treaty, which would allow Altare to share their technologically advanced weapons, King Parker knows it's his duty to marry Laie's queen. However, he finds it hard to seal the deal when he realizes it's not Queen Suu-Naung he needs and desires, but the young, passionate Princess Tamea who possesses a warrior's instincts.

Parker questions his own sanity in starting this love affair, just as he questions how this young lady could have become a high-ranking officer in the 1500's Asia, where women's rights were suppressed behind curtains and veils.

As Tamea's psychic abilities suddenly blossom, Parker becomes irrevocably connected to her in this time and place. With the passionate Princess igniting the fire in his life, Parker also begins questioning his long-standing scientific goal; going back to his future.

It seems, as soon as they find each other, intrigue and war threaten to separate them forever. Altare and Laie must quickly join forces to stop their mutual enemies from within their own ranks and from their neighboring country of Bengal.

Princess Tamea begins healing the King's emotional scars leftover from another time and place, in the 1960's America, where Parker fought for his country in the Vietnam War. Even though the Princess has been trained to infiltrate and protect, it's King Parker of Altare who brings in the big guns from an era long in the future, saving her from the enemies' torturous plans.

Patti has been writing since the 7th grade when her English teacher took active interest in her poetry and short story writing. She became hooked when one of her short stories was published in the local library literary magazine. Her first love became science-fiction when she was introduced to the works of Ray Bradbury.

Fandom bit her when she actually met the man behind the works in 1987 at a special engagement speech in Phoenix, Arizona. She had taken many of those writing tips and life examples to apply in her everyday life. "Never stop to edit, just keep writing until you're done, then go back and edit, and edit, and edit again until you're satisfied."

Patti has been applying some writing in almost everything she has done from that time forward. She has written in college papers, literary magazines, public relations articles, business procedure manuals and having even gone as far as having published her own magazine on Arizona Graphics & Marketing. Her writing had become publishing, where she was contracted to publish real-estate magazines and other trade magazines from her graphic design business.

She had been working for a print shop in Phoenix for over thirteen years, while continuing to work on the side in her own business as the work came to her. Cyber Writers and the Zebra of Life is geared to all middle grade readers and creates a bridge for the early young adult readers too. Also the novel is modeled on researched techniques to attract reluctant readers. In 2006 Scholastic Magazine did a study, The Kids and Family Reading Report, and found that the amount of reading kids did for fun decreased from the time they were 8 through the teen years. Kids said the number-one reason for not reading more was that they couldn't find books that interested them. The study also revealed that kids look to their parents for ideas on what to read.

Mason Witt is an average kid who loves skateboarding. He had been grounded for a week for riding his skateboard in the neighbors empty pool, and today was his first day of freedom. He was anxious to get off the bus to ride his board.

When he got home his mother made him his favorite snack of apples and peanut butter, so he ate quickly to be able to ride his board before they had to run errands. Before going to play, he ran to his room to put his backpack away and checked his email.

Being a pen pal on Cyber Writers, he found an email from Africa. Before he was able to read it, his mother yelled that they had to leave sooner than anticipated so they could get his brother Jamie at Karate, then go get hair cuts.

While getting their hair cuts Mason was so excited to get that email he asked the barber if he knew anything about Africa. When asked why, Mason told all about being a pen pal with Cyber Writers.

Finally home, Mason grabs a slice of pizza and runs upstairs to check his email. He starts reading and the introduction of Lutalo begins. Lutalo is in desperate need of help to return a Zebra and his missing father. "The Zebra is what brings prosperity to farmers crops and harmony to all villagers". The Zebra is known as the "Zebra of Life".

Getting ready for bed Mason crawls under the covers to finish reading his email. Suddenly he feels vines, jumping out of bed he realizes that his bedroom is changing into a jungle. Mason has been virtually transported to Africa.

Follow Mason and Lutalo during their adventures through Africa, as they begin the chase in hopes to safely return the Zebra of Life and Lutalo's father, Mwamba.

Kostlivy did a great job with her first book in the Cyber Writer Series. I found myself anxious to find out what happened next, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I was amazed with the plot and she kept my attention from beginning to end.

Tech Talk with Author Jacqui Murray

Today my guest is Jacqui Murray. Thank you for stopping in Jacqui. Please tell us a little about yourself......

I was born in Berkley California to Irish-German parents. After receiving a BA in Economics, another in Russian and an MBA, I spent twenty years in a variety of industries while raising two children and teaching evening classes at community colleges. Now, I live with my husband, adult son and two beautiful Labradors and I write. I write how-books, five blogs on everything from the USNA to tech to science, and a column for the Examiner on tech tips.

Oh. I also write books.

What inspired you to pen your first title?

My non-fictions books are all inspired by similar circumstances. When my daughter wanted a book on how to get into the Naval Academy, all she could find were books that told her how hard it was, how selective they were, how very few could achieve it. My daughter brushed them off, but I wondered how many kids would be discouraged by that approach and decided to write a book explaining how to achieve the goal, not why kids couldn’t. I stressed how teens can solve the problems that stood in their way rather than why they couldn’t, how they could get where they wanted to go rather than why they couldn’t get there. That worked for my daughter and I had no doubt it would work for others. From what I hear from readers, it’s true.
My tech workbooks are the same. When I went back to teaching, I could find no workbooks for teaching technology to K-5. There were how-tos, but not geared for students of that age group. So I decided to write them. I geared the books for parents with nominal computer skills, homeschoolers and lab specialists. It outlines the method I use in my classes that gets kids from the most basics of computer skills in kindergarten to Photoshop by fifth grade. I’m not surprised that the method works, and is now being used in school districts all over the country.

How long have you been writing?

About twelve years.

What was the hardest part about writing this particular novel?

Marketing it. I love everything about writing, even when I hate it. But selling my stuff—that’s difficult. Publishers don’t do that much any more, so it’s up to me to get the word out. The internet’s great for that, as well as social networks, blogs, websites, and Virtual Tours, of course.

Have any dreams been realized as a result of your writing?

A big part of writing my tech workbooks was to organize my thoughts so I could teach the material better. That has worked so very well. I find that having a plan, like a map, never fails to get my students to the finish line. I hear this over and over from parents, that they can’t believe how much their kids have accomplished in my classes. Well, that’s because we know where we’re going and we know how to get there. It sounds simple, but how often does it not happen in tech classes.

Where do you hope to take your writing in the future?

I am working on a fiction series. I love science and want to pass that passion on to students, so my fiction endeavors have that goal in mind. My first fiction novel, To Hunt a Sub, is a techno-thriller about nefarious characters using brainy science to steal America's Trident submarines and how an equally-brainy female grad student stops them. It won the Southern California Writers Conference Outstanding Fiction Award last year and is in the final stages of rewrite. I have an excerpt available on Scribd.com.

What advice do you have for writer's just starting out?

My advice is to write to your passion. That’s a little different from write what you know, but in my experience, research fills in the knowledge gaps and gives the author so much more in the writing experience. So, I love finding topics that fascinates me, researching them and weaving them into an inspiring story. If you can do that, you’ll never worry about getting rejected by agents or not getting published because you’ll already have gotten so much more than you gave out of your writing.

Please give a warm welcome to my guest Arelene Crenshaw, author of Twelve Roses for Uretta. This is a touching tale and I'm so happy to have Arelene here. Thank you so much for stopping in Arlene. Thank you for having me.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.....

I’m a 48 yr woman with one son and two grandchildren, I raised my son on my own. We struggled many of days but we made it. I blessed in so many ways. I lost my job about a year ago for something that was not my fault. It’s been difficult, finding work, and I prayed everyday for God to help me find something in this world I enjoyed doing, and in a dream a voice came upon me (God) and said to me. “You are here for a purpose and it is to write and inspire people.” Something I’ve did all my life…inspire people, who would think that I would be writing novels today. Dreams do come true if you believe.

Is Twelve Roses for Uretta your first novel?

Yes it is, and I’m so very proud of myself.

What inspired you to pen this novel?

I had reached a point in my life that the pain became too much. I was tired of suffering mental and physically with my health and everyday life I was just plain unhappy no matter what I did or what other did for me. I realized I had be crying my entire life and sometimes I didn’t even understand why, so I decided It was time to go right to the cause and this was my way of healing within. Thank God, it worked now I feel like a whole new world has opened up to me.

Do you relate to your characters in any way?

In my book I am Erica who tells the story.

What was the hardest thing about writing this particular novel?

This is a true story, the hardest thing was all the memories I had to deal with, and how the more I wrote the better I felt getting it all out of my system after 47 years of carrying this pain around. It was very hard for me but it was something I had to do for myself. I wrote, I cried and I got it all out. I got rid of the pain that claimed most of my life.

Have you received much controversy with this book?

If so, how do you handle it? I have… most people really enjoyed my book; they said it was a very emotional read. I did have some problems within my family, but I had to remind them this story was told through the eyes of a child. It was not meant to hurt anyone, it was told for self healing and remembrance of someone that was so special to me. And I also wrote it for awareness that things like this happen everyday, and It happens to those who you least expect it to happen to. They just may be going through situation like in my book or going through something even worse.

What message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

My book “Twelve Roses for Uretta” takes this message seriously. Love should not hurt and domestic violence can kill, don’t be a victim, there is always help. “Just reach out.”

What dreams have been realized as a result of your book being published?

My wildest dreams, that I able to do something wonderful and that is creative by me, something people enjoy and seem to really like and they want more and more. I realized that dreams do come true. I was once told that the only thing that comes to a dreamer is a dream. Well I’m living proof that dreams do come true and I’m enjoying every bit of the ride.

Where do you hope your writing will take you in the future?

I love writing I hope to put out as many books as I can but my goal is for someone out there to see my writing talent and pick me up to be one of the writers on HBO or Lifetime Channel. I would love to be a writer on projects like 24, Treme, Flash Forward, Big Love or even True Blood I love those series. Wish me luck…

Are you currently working on any new projects?

I’m always working on something, I have another book coming out in mid July 2010, a book of short stories and also I’m putting together another book for later this year.

What advice can you give to aspiring authors?

If people listen to what you say when you talk or even write it down, both in my case, and want more and more from you, give them what they want…write books. I’ve always been told I was in the wrong career, which was the medical field all my life. Then one day I decide to take charge of my life and do what I loved to do and that was. “Write stories and quotes” and I do them both daily.

What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to know about you?

That would be I never thought I would be a writer. I can write stories all day but, my punctuation sucks…

Any events or news you would like to share with us today?

Yes, my next novel is called “Hidden Closets” due to be release the middle of July 2010. This novel is a book of short stories about people’s hidden secrets that they keep hidden, and want to remain hidden. There is a variety of stories that I challenged my self on, there is a lot of drama, suspense, comedy, and down right outrageous things that people hide. In this book, I really put secrets out there a truly must read.

I’m on facebook daily, where I do my daily quote of the day.
